Olav Hackstein (Dr. phil. 1993, Universität Freiburg im Breisgau; Habilitation 1999, Universität Halle an der Saale) held positions in Historical and Indo-European linguistics at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia (visiting lecturer, 1989), and the Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg (1994 assistant professor, 1999 associate professor). Since 2008 he has been full professor, and chair in Historical and Indo-European Linguistics at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. In 2016 he was guest professor (directeur d’études invité) at the École Pratique des Hautes Études in Paris.
His research interests focus on comparative Indo-European and general linguistics, and particularly on the historical morphology and syntax of the ancient Indo-European languages.
His main publications include: Untersuchungen zu den sigmatischen Präsentien des Tocharischen (Vandenhoeck&Ruprecht 1995); Die Sprachform der homerischen Epen (Ludwig Reichert 2002), Apposition and Nominal Classification in Indo-European and Beyond (Austrian Academy of Sciences, Vienna 2010).
He is editor of Kratylos, International Review Journal of Indo-European and General Linguistics (Reichert Verlag, Wiesbaden), and coeditor of Historical Linguistics/Historische Sprachforschung (Vandenhoeck&Ruprecht, Göttingen), and Brill’s Studies in Indo-European Languages & Linguistics (Brill, Leiden).
He acquired external funding for two major research projects, externally funded by the German Research Council, The Legend of the Life of Buddha in Tocharian Texts (2012 ), Digital Philological-Etymological Dictionary of the Minor Language Corpora of Ancient Anatolia (2014 ).

Pendant l’année 2016 il était directeur d’études invité à l’ École Pratique des Hautes Études à Paris.
Ses recherches portent sur la linguistique historique et comparative des langues indo-européennes et, tout particulièrement, sur la morphologie historique de ces langages et leur évolution syntaxique.
